Curriculum Vitae

Personal Statement

I have recently graduated from a multimedia course, where I specialised in web design. I hope to become a graphic/web designer or, preferably, a concept artist in the videogame industry.

Skills Profile

At the University of Cumbria I learned a variety of computer skills, such as 3D modelling and web design. It is web design that I chose to specialise in. I have skills in HTML, CSS, and Dreamweaver, as well as having used some JavaScript and CSS. Graphic design is an important part of the web design process, and when creating graphics I use Photoshop, which I am skilled in using because as well as being taught it on the course I use it often in my spare time. I also have knowledge of other graphic design software such as Illustrator.

Experience and Achievements

Freelance Website Design (2008) Carlisle

I designed and built a website for a local massage therapist. The project included working closely with the client to make the best use of the content as well as getting constant feedback on the look of the site. I improved my graphic and HTML skills a little, and also made use of PHP for the first time.

Theatre lighting (November-December, 2007)

For the Christmas season I joined the volunteer staff of a local theatre company, where my job was to light the pantomime they were producing. I had to learn quickly, because I had no previous experience with theatre lighting, and again I was working as part of a team.

Final project (2007)

The brief was to create a website with a high level of interactivity and innovation. I based mine around drawing tutorials and built it in Flash, with graphics created in Photoshop and by hand. Inspired by the website dontclick.it, I decided to create a navigation system where instead of clicking you would draw a circle around where you wanted to go. I designed the graphics and interface to resemble a sketchbook, to give it the feeling of actually drawing in a sketchbook. Another important part of the project was presenting the ideas. There were many times when I had to explain my ideas to the tutors and my classmates, ranging from informal critique sessions to a full presentation in a lecture theatre.

Negotiated Project (2006)

For this module I was required to work in a group to produce a promotional package for the college. The tasks were shared out in such a way that the group needed to be in constant communication in order to create a cohesive piece of work, and good organisational and time management skills were required. My job in the group was to create the interactive CD-ROM that would be included in the package.

Advanced Digital Animation (2006)

In this module I modelled both a car and a character in SoftImage XSI. This gave me knowledge of what kind of things to bear in mind when designing an object to be modelled in 3D.

New Media Narrative Structures (2006)

Another module where I worked as a part of a group, the brief was to design some characters and create a story for a videogame. Environment sketches were also required.

Enthusiasms

As mentioned above, I like to draw in my spare time. Most of that time is spent working on a large personal project which will develop my skills in character, environment, creature and equipment design. I enjoy playing videogames, especially action-adventure and RPG games. I also like books and films, mostly science-fiction and fantasy, and these often have a strong influence on my drawing. I particularly enjoy games and films when they have a strong artistic style.
